Most commercial insurance providers cover bariatric surgery for patients who meet eligibility criteria for medical necessity. Medicare covers the procedure under unusual circumstances for individuals who meet strict eligibility criteria. These usually include one or more of the following:

• High blood pressure that cannot be controlled with medication
• Sleep apnea
• Diabetes which is poorly managed medically
