Are you a Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery?

In 1991, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) drafted a set of guidelines for the surgical treatment of obesity. At the Center for Bariatric Surgery, we apply these guidelines to select our patients for surgery. Psychiatric/Psychologic clearance is indicated for patients with a history of mental disorders or those who have been treated for depression by a mental health professional. Patients under the age of 21 are generally not acceptable candidates for surgery and the upper age limit for patient selection is 60. Exceptions can be made under unusual circumstances and with full support from the patient's primary care provider and family. Supporting written documentation outlining these special circumstances may be required.

Patient Selection Requirements

• Patient must be at least 100 pounds overweight (preferably > 5yrs.)
• Must have a body mass index (BMI) over 40, or BMI of 35 to 39 with obesity-related health complications. To calculate your BMI, click here.
• Must have exhausted conventional dieting and weight loss methods as judged by a knowledgeable physician
• Must be motivated
• Must be fully informed of risk, benefits, alternatives and anatomic changes
• Must have acceptable surgical risk profiles
• Lesser degrees of obesity may be considered if associated with life-threatening conditions or reduced quality of life
• Willing to submit to prolonged follow-up
