Center for Bariatric SurgeryGetting StartedAre you a Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery? In 1991, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) drafted a set of guidelines for the surgical treatment of obesity. At the Center for Bariatric Surgery, we apply these guidelines to select our patients for surgery. Psychiatric/Psychologic clearance is indicated for patients with a history of mental disorders or those who have been treated for depression by a mental health professional. Patients under the age of 21 are generally not acceptable candidates for surgery and the upper age limit for patient selection is 60. Exceptions can be made under unusual circumstances and with full support from the patient's primary care provider and family. Supporting written documentation outlining these special circumstances may be required. Patient Selection Requirements
